Why rest matters after a race?

Q: Coach, why is recovery after a race is so important?
A: “Recovery is important for both energy and strength. After a race,
the body needs time to rebuild what it has used; physically and
mentally.
Athletes also need to regain a bit of the weight and energy they lost
before and during the race.
Rest gives them the time to prepare properly for the next challenge.
It helps the body come back stronger, and the mind stay fresh and
focused.”

Q: Some athletes feel guilty when they stop. What would you tell
them?
A: “Rest doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means doing the right
amount of nothing.
It’s a chance to reconnect with yourself, to enjoy running again
without the pressure of splits or pace. Many injuries come from
ignoring that simple truth.”

Q: Let’s talk specifics: how long should elite athletes rest after a
race?
A: “Taking time to recover after a race is very important. Usually,
your manager helps plan the racing schedule to make sure you have
enough time between competitions.
For marathon runners, there are normally five to six months between
big races.
The first month is for relaxing and light activity, giving the body and
mind a break.
The next month is for development, focusing on rebuilding strength
and endurance.
Then, you move into about three months of intensity, working on
motor skills, speed, long runs, coordination, and mental strength.
All of this only works well if you allow enough time to recover.
Recovery is what makes the next performance possible.”

Q: Any advice for recreational runners?
A: “It’s important to manage your time wisely if you want to be
successful in running. Stay in touch with your coach; he can help you
plan and recover properly.
Don’t try to race too often. It’s better to do fewer races with high
quality than many without purpose.
Have a clear plan, and make sure each year you see progress, not
decline.
Do the right things, at the right time, with the right people and you’ll keep moving forward.”
