Fikrte Wereta’s recent win at the Seoul Marathon has captured hearts worldwide. For a while, a large group of female athletes ran together, after which Fikrte managed to break away from the group at the 35 km mark. She finished in 2 hours, 21 minutes, and 32 seconds (a personal record).

Fikrte grew up in Debark, North Gonder, where she spent her childhood playing with friends. As a young girl, she discovered her love for running during her school days when she had to walk and run 20 kilometers every day to get to class and back home. That daily journey sparked her passion for running. Seeing athletes train in her hometown wearing new gear inspired Fikrte to become an athlete herself.

Though, her journey has not been without obstacles. Fikrte encountered many challenges along the way, including financial difficulties, opposition from her family, and injuries. Though, she faced them with patience and determination, using each setback as motivation to push harder towards her goals. Winning the Seoul Marathon was a significant achievement for Fikrte, but it was just one step on her journey. She dreams of becoming a World- and Olympic champion and setting a world record in marathon running.

Fikrte’s friends and training partners are like family to her, always there to support and encourage her. She also finds strength in her faith, regularly visiting the church for inspiration and believing in the power of holy water. Fikrte: “It’s a believe from our culture. These challenges have shaped me to become an athlete at this level. My culture and faith have taught me good lessons in life.”

Moreover, Fikrte runs around 145 to 155 kilometers every week, focusing on long runs which she likes the most. For food, Fikrte prefers to eat traditional Ethiopian dishes, especially when she’s training. She believes sticking to the diet, even on race days, helps her perform her best. By carefully balancing her workouts and meals, Fikrte stays in great shape and has the stamina to compete in marathons worldwide.

Fikrte’s message to young woman athletes is simple: “work hard, stay patient, and never give up on your dreams”.  Fikrte’s story will continue to inspire generations of athletes to chase their goals with passion and perseverance.
