The 2012 Berlin Marathon was a race to remember. The two Volare Sports training partners, Geoffrey Mutai and Dennis Kimetto, had already established themselves as dominant forces in marathon running. They ran through the streets of Berlin, keeping the world on the edge of their seats until the very end.

From the 25th kilometer, it became clear that this marathon was going to be a duel between Mutai and Kimetto. The pair broke away from the leading pack after a brief discussion, deciding to take on the final stretch together. Their coordinated steps and shared understanding underscored the strong connection they have as training partners. By the time they reached the Brandenburg Gate, both were on pace to challenge the world record, but it was not to be.

The final moments of the race were peculiar. As they approached the finish line, there was no furious sprint, no dramatic lunge for the tape. Instead, Mutai edged ahead by a small margin, finishing in 2:04:15, with Kimetto just a second behind at 2:04:16. The finish photo captures the essence of their team spirit.

This victory secured Mutai the 2011-2012 World Marathon Majors title, adding to his previous wins in Boston and New York City. The race stands as proof of the narrow margins and strategic choices that characterize marathon running at the elite level.

As we look forward to the upcoming Berlin Marathon on September 29, Volare Sports will once again be well-represented at the start line. Volare athletes Bethwell Kipkemboi, Evaline Chirchir, Bekelech Gudeta, Betelihem Afenigus, Yebrgual Melese, and Fikrte Wereta will be looking to make their mark on one of the world’s fastest marathon courses. With such a strong lineup, another thrilling race is undoubtedly on the horizon.
